Skorpion Sport headlight bulbs.

Postby ribs » Fri Jul 31, 2009 7:50 am

Hi,
I am a brand-new member of this forum and I'm having a devil of a job trying to find replacement bulbs for my skorpion Sport. Both Grahams Motorcycles and my MZ handbook state that the bulbs should be H3 mainbeam and H1dip. When I took them out they were Koto R 962 - completely different and certainly not interchangable with H1 and H3. No one (on, or offline,) seems to be able to supply these. What is the answer - any ideas?

The missus and me have served our time on MZ 2-strokes and now ride Skorpion Traveller and Sport respectively. I competed in the early days (Until 1994,) of MZ racing - the most fun you can have with your clothes on! Our other bikes are 1951 Velocette MAC 350cc and 1958 Velocette hillclimb/race bike 500cc - so I suppose you could say we are single people. The race bike is daylight road legal (ish,) and makes an interesting comparison with the Skorpion Sport - latter day Velocette Thruxton?

The headlight used on UK market bikes were as follows:

The Traveller was usually fitted with a headlight with one beam for high and one beam for low (dip). These take an H1 and an H3 bulb.

The Sport was fitted with a physically identical headlight which had two twin filament bulbs (ie both for high and low). This is the one that takes the unusual bulb, sourced from a Yamaha FZR 1000. The box I have is marked 'Koito MH6R 0488 12V 55/40W'. Apparently these are no longer available from Yamaha dealers, but you can get them from M&P http://www.mandp.co.uk/productinfo/526016/Spares/Bulbs-and-Fuses/On-Two-Wheels/FZR-Bulb and Buster's http://www.busters-accessories.co.uk/productInfo.aspx?catRef=MAP526016&kw=fzr+bulb Yes, they are £16.99 each!

Both headlights have problems: the Traveller headlight isn't very good as the beam is very poorly focussed, and the Sport headlights tend to fall apart inside. Both can be replaced with a headlight from a Yamaha TRX 850. It's exactly the same size, so bolts straight in, but you'll have to change the bulb connector as it takes one 'standard' H4 bulb, available cheaply in any petrol station. Despite having only one bulb it seems to be as bright as the Sport headlight and a lot better than the Traveller's.
The TRX headlight costs about £75 (I believe), but turn up on Ebay for £20 - 30.
Sorry, I've no idea what was fitted outside the UK, but if your Traveller has an asymmetrical headlight with one beam for high and one for dip, then it'll probably take H1 and H3 bulbs.
Hope this is of some help.

Thanks for that. I do have the expensive bulbs it appears. It seems that my best option is the TRX850 route - then I can use the H4 bulb.
