'Rough' or dry(?) clutch ETZ 251

Postby Robinm » Mon Jul 06, 2009 1:29 am

Hello, just joined after buying my first MZ.

Really like the bike and am getting to know it's quirks.. my bike has quite a 'rough' clutch, hard to describe, feels like the cable is dry but it isn't (oiled it already)
When you let the clutch out it goes in short stages instead of smoothly which can mean a jerky take off.. Is this a common problem and what's the fix please?
Is the 'engine end' of the mechanism dry?

Much appreciated,

Robin.

the edge of the basket where the disc ride is ruff and the plates can not move free when the springs push them
they will hang up and twist and not move even
also change the oil in tranny if it been setting unused --old oil does not help
the basket below is from a mz rt125 but they are almost all the same
see scuff marks at the red arrow when this edge becomes ruff things do not work very good..
also consider new springs if its an older bike

on the 2 stroke mz i think there is a worm gear type thing that works the clutch
it runs in the alum..case and may need lube

i think this is one of the best pictures i have ever taken with my digital camera

Before you do ripping off the covers and delving in. I would first either remove the cable and double check it and its routing or I would simply replace it. I would strip the lever from the fulcrum and clean - these do wear and get pretty clogged up. Only then would I think of taking the cover off - with MZs well the 2T originals things usually prove to be simple. Good luck and keep us posted.

PS no the clutch shares oil with the gearbox - there is a drain plug on the side and one underneath. I would change that too - if it looks like milk coffee then there is water in it. If it smells strongly of petrol then you main seals are shot. I use Silkolene light gear oil - good stuff.
All the best
