MZ TS250/1 - IDLE!!

Heya all, first time poster, long time reader.

I have an MZ TS250/1 (1987) that im starting to use again.

couple of little annoyances!!!

First, the choke, when you open the choke, if you let go, it closes again. You have to hold it back to have it on.

second. the bike will not start or run on choke, it just kicks over and wont start

third - I Cannot get the bike to a reasonable idle!!! - ive managed to settle it at 2.1/2.2k - so id say this is pretty high for a low revving 2 stroke!!!

Any tips? tricks? - please note, it has always been like the above in my ownership!!!

**Bike does seem happy enough apart from these and is really easy to get into top gear and get her off the clocks!!***

Hi Jenks, some information wich may be of use. First of all it's not a choke thats fitted to your bike but a fuel enrichment device, it doesn't work the same as a choke and shouldn't be used as such. Trying to start the engine with this fuel enrichment lever on will only flood the engine. The starting procedure for a TS250/1 is as follows
1. Ignition off, fuel on, fuel enrichment lever full on.
2. Give the kickstart four kicks, this primes the crank chambers with fuel.
3. Ignition on, fuel enrichment lever off, kickstart the engine.
4. The bike will normally start first or second kick, you may need to give it just a hint of throttle.

P.S. your idle speed of 2.1/2.2k is actually pretty good. They should idle about 1.2 - 1.5 K but are notoriously difficult to set at that range because of the relative simplicity/crudeness of the carb. Mine ticksover when hot at 3k which is admittedly too high but hey....it runs.

Hi,
Is there an 'O' ring on the choke plunger? If so replace it. This should improve things a bit. Also put some grease around where the choke cable enters the carb. This will seal out any air leaks. Also, have you tried dropping the idle speed using the throttle stop screw?

if it has been setting for a long time and has points the points may look good ----
but i have found that the spring that keeps the points closed or against the ignition lobe ware out
had a bmw that set for 13 years and had a lot of fun finding why it would not run
IF POINTS ARE OLD REPLACE THEM
if you have new points and store them uncock the spring or they will be worthless
i came across 20 sets of points for a bmw /5 the other day and told the fellow lots of luck there worthless
1973 new old stock and not worth taking home even if free because stored with the spring wound up
