MZ/MuZ Riders

Just been looking on U Tube re a conversion of a Yamaha RXS100 from 6 to 12 volt using a modern solid state voltage regulator, also a well know sales site for updating electric's here in the UK sells 6-12 volt conversion regulators for the Brit bikes powered by the Prince of Darkness (Lucas) dynamos. I'm aware on the Yam conversion that minor work is under taken on the regulator but is this possible on MZ's ?

Hi,

it depends on which type of MZ you want to convert to 12V. An instruction to convert a TS, ETS oder ES from 6 to 12V for around 60€ on your own can be found here: http://www.gespannfreunde.de/Berichte/MZ%2012V%20Umbau.htm
For all other types there's, as far as I know, no other possibility than a Powerdynamo system.

Thanks Dave I did not want to run to the expense of the powerdynamo system. Rowolf many thanks unfortunately through no fault of yours the link you attached part of the wiring diagram was missing
My train of thought started after seeing the attached on utube. see link http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ljDFwVgvELI Also on utube is a conversion of a Suzuki 100 but that's in Spanish so that rules me out!!!
The bike I want to convert is a TS250, I can purchase a voltage regulator from Paul Geoff in the uk as used on BSA Triumphs etc but its the wiring in of the regulator into the MZ circuit and possibly changing around the wiring on the alternator that I'm not sure of. So any help ideas will be most welcome.

Back in my Supa5 days I built one of the 12v regulators that was described in the MZ Riders magazine and it was OK as long as I was thrashing the bike up and down motorways, but around town it didn't stick enough juice into the battery and just before I bit the bullet and returned it to 6V the regulator blew up, 3 days before my holiday in the IOM. Which is why i ended up going to the TT on a Yamaha YB100!

Why do you want to change to 12V?

That's interesting therealche, I was looking at the swellers pages last night and he said you have to be running above 3k to keep it charging with the standard charging equipment.
My reason is so that I can have ease of access to 12 volt bulbs etc but also using the bike in the winter it would be nice to have heated grips as I'm not aware of any one manufacturing 6 volt ones. Mind a chap at in the Staff's section runs led bulbs all round plus a solid state regulator and then uses 12 volt heated grips on a 6 volt system they work but don't get as hot so that may be away forward.

Well just hoping the rain stops, off to the Notts/Derby section camp in Matlock tomorrow, just looked at the map and would you credit it the have gone and put the campsite adjacent a pub!!!!!!!
