TS 250/ ETZ 250

Hi,
New to the site and thnking of buying a Ts250 or ETZ 250. I have done a little research but I'd like to know from the people that use them what sort of issues I should be looking for when checking either of the above models.

As these older models slide into classic status - much to the annoyance of those of us who have been around a while, you will find that the ETZ250 offers more bike for your money.

Things to look for are bodged electrics
Damaged crank end
Mains rumble
blown fork seals
blown crank seals - the gearbox will smell of petrol
On the ETZ that the bottom of the frame nearest the footrests isn't rotted out.
That the swingarm nuts come undone and the swing arm isn't seized in.
Both should start readily from cold.
Pinking or excessive kickback
Loss of pulling power due to coked exhaust.

Finally an ETZ250 will be better built than a ETZ251 or ETZ301

Some of these later models may be made in Turkey and that will make a difference where parts are concerned. Although the 301 motor has a bit more go. And the TS is 6v standard, and less peaky in performance. Some will tell you more torquey but what does that look like on a 250 2T single?

Joined the forum this morning having just bought a 1990 ETZ251 after a 15 years away from MZs (ES250/1, ETS250, Supa 5). Generally pleased but 2 things, seems grossly overgeared, any benefits in fitting a smaller gearbox sprocket? and the horrible thud in the back on the over run. Carb and ignition timing ok. Slightly disappointed. Dont remember the Supa 5 being this bad. Sure you have read these comments before but am a bit rusty on improvements required. Any comments. John

I have never ridden an ETZ so i can't comment much there. But as far as the TS 250 goes I can't recommend highly enough! For starters personally I would get a five speed model (TS250/1, Supa 5) if you are going to go for a TS. The beauty of 2-stroke MZ is there simplicity. There is not much to go wrong that can't be fixed. However,do make sure the gears all select well as there is a problem with the bearings on some bikes. Also the more the current owner uses it the better condition it's likely to be in. If it has stood for a while you might find, as I did, that you have to replace a few parts, but as they are very cheap it's not too much to worry about. As some one else has mentioned bodged or doggy electrics can be problematic so might be worth asking if you can have a look under the right hand engine case.

You will need to explain in more details.

The ETZ is more rev happy than the TS by reputation.

Parts are will be cheaper as the classic crowd are now claiming the TS series and earlier as their own and thereby pushing up the price for those of us of the old school

Thud in the back. Always was a MZ 250 problem. I find on the over run the bike pushes forward on each firing stroke, easily cured if the carb is set to no idle but not ideal. Used to be worse on my 4 speeders then the later 5 speed bikes. Stripped the carb again and found the float level to be too high, this now corrected and a big improvement. Have put a few miles on the 251 now and have grown to like it alot. Can live with the high gearing on 'B' roads as its so flexible in 4th. Yes the finish is not as good as the older ES and TS bikes but thats progress. The better brakes and 12 volt electrics more than make up. It makes me smile when I ride it so must be ok. John
