hi can anybody help with a charging problem on a 1980 supa5,putting a meter accross the battery its reading anywhere between 0 and 19 volts so fast you can barely make it out, ive tried 3 regulators one mechanical and two electronic and ive tried three complete dynamo s, after 35 years of mz ownership its the first time ive been really stumped.

i am thinking that you have a short that is intermittent
maybe something touching the flywheel or a moving part if its running
use an old time vom with a needle not a new digital meter
and load test the battery it may be bad
dave

extra thought after i wrote this
did the plus and minus wires get miss labeled by past workers on the bikes problems
and the battery is in backwards

Thanks for reply dave much appreciated , at the moment the only thing connected is the battery and coil and still the same reading s on meter . I shall try another coil but the one in use at the moment is new also the battery.

What meter are you using? Is it switched to AC or DC voltage?

David.

Thanks for the replies, I have found the problem, by more luck than judjement on my part, it has baffled quite a few of my knowledgable friends along the way also, sitting on my milk crate staring at the bike, thinking how absolutely ridiculous, this problem is ,only one component i havent changed , the plug cap , hey presto solved,I have friends who are very clever electrically, and they are really taken aback as to how the charge system was affected by this, many thanks for the help everyone

did you figure out what the cap was doing to cause this
or did it just stop when you changed it out

I was looking through my mz spares for another coil to try when i came accross two old plug caps, and thought its the only part i havent changed after weeks of hassle, the bike was sorted in minutes, ive never in my biking experience come accross anything like this, its still a conversation piece among friends of mine . Many thanks dave and all who contributed
