if there are brushes on the alternator clean the contact rings and check the brushes

yeah they are brushes, gonna do that when i fit the solid state regulator.

Ah thats it! A lot of Japanese bikes combine the regulator and regulator in one unit so if one goes you have to replace the both of them. MZ have the common sense to have the two bits separate! The MZ rectifier is very very reliable so I would leave it where it is

I recenty bought a well used / rough ETZ 301.
I went through the electrics from top to toe - many of the push in connectors had become loose or made poor contact.
I cut the old terminals off and replaced them as necessary and cleaned up all the terminals best I could.
Now seems to charge OK - it also fixed an indicator problem that the bike had when I bought it.
So definately recomemned going over the wiring and use a meter to check continuity.
