TS 250/1 Supa 5 - alternative carbs

Postby mitzi » Thu Sep 08, 2011 5:02 am

I have been given a BVF 30 N 3-1 carb (clip-on float bowl type) from a late ETZ 251 and would like to hear from anyone who has tried one of these on a Supa 5. I see from the Haynes manual that they are quite different with their lack of throttle stop screw and with the pilot jet under a blanking screw.

Is it worth me bothering to try it on my Supa 5 given that my original carb is working fine. I have managed to achieve a good, reliable tickover of about 1,200 rpm without too much hunting (I can live with it anyway!)

Also would be glad to hear any suggestions for replacement carbs that do offer improvements.

Cheers
Del & Mitzi (the Supa 5)

From memory they work the same, the BVF if anything is a little more subtle. If it ain't broke leave it alone. My rule with MZs is get it fettled properly and then leave it alone.

Hi Old Dog

Thanks for the reply. Am sure your advice is VERY sound. Took me a good while to get my beloved Mitzi sorted and reliable when I bought her earlier in the year, including tank off twice for clean out and carb off 3 times for the same. Shall resist the temptation to try out my new 'toy' until such time as I have to have the carb off again for whatever reason.

Cheers

Splice in a fuel filter and get on with riding it.

If I remember correctly, the BVF 30 N 3-1 was the last BVF carburettor fitted to ETZ250-301s before they fitted the BING.

It was fitted to enable the bike to pass the latest emission regulations, and as a result are very difficult to set up correctly, (well I never could) if they work leave will alone.

The carb you need is the previous version,( sorry can't remember the No, but 3 screws holding the float bowl) as fitted to the ETZ, this is a more modern set up to yours and could be used as a upgrade I think.

Hi Skorpion.

Thanks for that. The original carb works absolutely fine, so will leave that in place for now. Will maybe try the later carb if ever I have to take the old one off again, just to see if it is any different. Without such pioneering experimentation, how would mankind ever move forward!!

Cheers

On the BVF 30N 3-1 check the needle clip for a secure fit, as its under the slide not inside like earlier
models, and has been known to come off and find its way into the engine with predictable results.
