1991 ETZ 125cc, clutch issues

Postby Sisyphus » Sun Sep 19, 2010 7:11 pm

Hi everyone.

I have recently acquired a ETZ 125cc, after a few issues resetting points, battery change and some dodgy electronics (probably down to the previous owner), I had a working machine!

Although it was working, it seemed a little low in power and there were certainly issue with the gearing as it was able to bump start with the clutch in...

One night on a ride from work, going up a hill, I lost all power and could not select any gear. So after pushing it some 8/9 miles, drained the engine oil, and took the clutch to pieces... to my surprise, I found this:

Yes, they are my friction plates, all of them! Came out like that.

I'm going to give Burwin's a call in the morning to order some replacements, however I have a some of questions before I replace them.

1) Has anybody seen anything like this before?

2) What could the possible causes be? I don't really want to put some new friction plates if them cracking is a symptom and not the problem itself.

3) I know it is quite hard to tell, I'll try get some better pictures up, but do they look like MZ friction plates or after-market replacements.

A couple of reason why I think it's happened is that they are after market and a previous owner has took a hack saw to them to make them fit, if you notice they have all cracked in pretty much the same place. But without knowing what original plates look like I couldn't say.

Secondly, from the smell, look and feel of it the engine oil looked just to be four stroke oil they had bunged in, so glad I removed that, would that lead to such catastrophic clutch failure?

Thanks

Hello Sisyphus.

1. Yes, but not all disc broken. Original discs are breakable.

2. Original discs with long mileage or sport ride, wheelies, ...Check gearbox bearings and up and down all speeds ok.

3. For my all the friction plates after-market I bought are better than original. Other MZ replacements
can have bad quality but friction plates make work fine, I drive it in the city a lot of hours every day.

I heard some riders fill also with 4 stroke oil. I fill always with EP oil without slip or other problems.

Best regards.

Thanks for the reply.

Malcolm at Burwin's is on Holliday for two weeks, so I ended up ordering from Frank Rodgers whom I found in the Mz Riders Club advertisements page, very polite and friendly.

The bike is ca 35700 miles, so if they were original then fair game, I'll see how these hold up for me. I'm going to give the clutch compartment a proper clean out and remove all traces of that possible 4-stroke oil and replace.

Saying this I have just seen a etz 250 for sale... the girlfriend is going to kill me.
