WOULD KTM PLASTICS FIT THE BAGHIRA

Postby claytonb » Fri Feb 08, 2008 7:52 am

HI GUYS,

ANOTHER TRICKY QUESTION. WOULD A FUEL TANK AND FRONT SIDE PANELS FIT THE BAGHIRA? WE ALREADY KNOW THAT THE RADIATORS ARE SAME AS THE LC4 SO WOULD IT BE POSSIBLE TO FIT A TANK AND SIDE PANELS?

Dunno mate. Have you smashed up your tank etc ? Otherwise why make it look like a KTM ? Granted the Baggy aint pretty as standard but with a hacksaw and a bit of imagination with the original plastics they can look really good. Spend a few quid (Dollars) and get an LED tail light to really smarten things up.....probably cheaper and easier than buying the KTM bits and making them fit.

Part of the pleasure of owning an MZ is that few people know what the hell it is cos it isnt parked on every street corner like your more run of the mill machines.

:D No my tank is fine. even my side panels are fine....what i m missing is a set of yokes but since I have the bike stranded I was thinking about changing the looks of the bike. And also when I read about the rad covers I got thinking about the tank side panels option. Did you do the side panels garf? Could you send me a pic?

Well here in Malta that pleasure is a bit rare. All those that are familiar to the biker world know what a baghira or mastiff is. Some of them dont know that its an MZ tough...they go 'what the hell is an MZ is japanese?' I go no its a german panzer. They are more popular than an XT. In fact I think its the most popular road going (that is not offroad competition like yzf)single cylinder in malta after the XR.

Those that dont know what it is are either new to the biker world or are those of the type that every racer is a CBR and every cruiser is a Harley  . I obviously do my best to educate them :-)

I looked into doing this but the KTM tank won't fit correctly to the frame and some interesting modifications would need to be made. To be honest i wouldn't bother, it's far too much hassle and wouldn't guarantee a secure and long lasting fit. Cutting the side panels is a good move forward, this is what we did on the STMZ panels. :D

Clayton,

I will be keeping the yokes and forks for my Baghira. When I do get the time to finish the USD installation I'll still want to keep them as I have another titled frame that's being used for the mods that I'm doing to my current Baghira. When I'm done I'll be decideing about something more rowdy like Mark has done on my other chassis.
Keep your eyes on ebay as I've seen two complete sets from the head set out come through. Unfortunatly before it was known that you needed a set.
As far as the KTM, you'd need to go to a dealer and get the bearing diamentions and the stem sizes and go from there. The only other location would likely be a salvage yard.

Robert

I will try and get some pics posted but I basically 'stole' the cut down tank plastics idea off Wonkys bike (Except mine look better  ) so you might find pics on here already.

You can also take a hell of a lot of plastic off the rear mudguard/undertray. I completely cut out past the old indicator mounts flush with the top rear fender, leaving a smaller mudguard to mount the license plate higher up under a tiny LED rear lamp. Aftermarket mini indicators were then mounted on an R'send bracket sticking out either side of the license plate ....it looks loads cleaner than standard.

One of the guys on here somewhere also dumped all the scaffolding off the front and fitted his orignal headlamp shroud on fork mounted clamps .....I will also be staeling that idea at some point ! Extra weight around the stearing axis isnt really desirable but it cant weigh that much and did look good !!

When it is all put back together, hopefully next week or so, I will get some pics posted. The parts to fix the accident damage were ordered in mid December but some had to come from the factory and only arrived a couple of weeks ago .....right in the middle of my repairers refit / reorganisation.

Still, it didnt really matter cos I have only just started to (sort of) walk in the last week so if the bike had been fixed I would only have been cursing the fact that I couldt use it !!

Cheers

Hi guys,

Thanks wonk, you just saved me buying a ktm tank and side panels. You ve done loads of mods to your bike so it must be too near to impossible to do for you to give it up.

OMC, I think i'll go with the YZ set up. I was just trying to broaden my options. Here we dont have a stabilised KTM dealership it keep on changing owners/companies every couple of yers so I dont know where it is at the moment. And besides they would only have new bikes, KTMs are not very common here. What are you doing for the yokes? Have you sorted that bit out yet? Are you using standard YZ? After market YZ? or custom made?

Garf i'll consider the cutting option but before I do it i would purchase a cheap spare set and cut tthem so if anything goes wrong I go back to standard. The rear mudguard/undertray has been long cut off my bike....its too big and ugly. My bike was fitted with a UFO mudguard/undertray. Its still a bit bulky but not as big and bulky as the standard one. It has both the back light and indicators fitted too it. Looks quite tidy. I will change it anyways after some time so to install tiny LED backlight and indicators....nothing can beat that. I ll try and post a pic of it later. BTW I hope you get well soon and start riding again mate. Like you I still have my bike in the garage and I cant ride it :smt005

Clayton,

If you choose to go with the YZ forks ( I wish I had the cash to spare for Ohlins ) consider the year of the fork to be puchased.
The one that I got with the TAG tree set is off of a 2003 YZ 250.
I talked to a friend that has a YZ and was told that if your going to tune on the forks get the 2003 on back to 1998 year range, they are supposed to be the same.
I choose the 2003 as it was the last year of that group of years ( the newest before any changes ).
My friend explained that having had both the older style bike and a brand new bike, the cost to tune the forks was about double on the new bike.
I went to several web forums that deal with the YZ, including supermoto, to verify the information.
Since the original forks worked fine I must admit that my reason for the USD is for looks alone. And the more I can make it personalized, without screwing it up too much...I think that anyone who owns an MZ understands.

Check my post on YZ250F fork fitting kits we are making. ALL models 01-06 YZ250F forks are the same, stick to these models and you will be fine. My new project has begun.... :-D
