Led indicator bulbs

Postby Pat the Jawa » Fri Apr 01, 2016 4:17 pm

Hi, does anyone know about using led indicator bulbs and an led flasher unit?
According to the pigeonsnest - Unlike a thermal flasher, it must be connected the "right way round". It is not therefore compatible with the somewhat awkward arrangement in the MZ where the same indicator bulb functions both as an indicator warning lamp and a charge warning lamp. The connection from this bulb should be removed from flasher terminal 49a and connected to terminal 15 of the ignition switch.
Does anyone know where flasher terminal 49a is and also terminal 15 of the ignition switch?
The led bulbs are loads brighter than the original incandescent bulbs and also aren't affected by the brake light bulb.
Thanks for any help. Pat - MZ TS 250/1

may be a problem replacing that one as it could effect the charging of battery

some systems use the bulb to control current flow to the generator to supply excitation of the generator windings
not sure about MZ but it can cause trouble in some systems

need an expert on the mz charging system to chime in on this

Cheers Dave. It should all be quite straight forward as the wiring is fairly simple but the trick is knowing what to do.

Have finally succeeded in getting the led indicator bulbs to work correctly and connect the low charge warning lamp so it doesn't interfere with the operation of the indicators. The 6 volt led bulbs were purchased from China via eBay at a cost of £8.09 and the led flasher unit/relay was £1.13. I also had to wire in (parallel) a couple of ordinary green dashboard warning lights with 6 volt incandescent bulbs at a cost of £8. All in all well worth the effort as the indicators are now as bright as 12 volt bulbs and are not affected by the brake light.

Pat any chance of info re suppliers of the bulbs and led flasher unit and if you don't mind more details on how you wired things together please.

Hello mzfred, glad to help. Do an eBay search for - 4pcs 6V 1156 ba15s 9 LED SMD Warm White Car Bulb Light Brake/Turn/Tail /Reverse. The bulbs are sold by hanzi214. Do an eBay search for - BIKINGEAR MOTORCYCLE UNIVERSAL 6-12v VOLT LED INDICATOR FLASHER RELAY NEW XW. The 6 volt led flasher relay/unit is sold by xwc2688. Do an eBay search for - DASH PANEL WARNING LIGHT GREEN MOTORBIKE CLASSIC GWL32 6 VOLT and also 2 x 6V 0.6w DASH LIGHT WARNING LIGHT BULBS 282 P228 CLASSIC 2 X 282. The dash panel warning light and bulbs are sold by abcautoelectricalspares2014. The led bulbs were fitted straight into each indicator and the flasher unit is simply connected via the spade connectors as per the original flasher unit. The indicator and flasher unit connections can easily be reversed if needed - the bulbs are negative earth. I'm not sure if your connections in your headlight will be the same as mine as either could have been altered by previous owners. I'll post this now so I don't loose it and continue tomorrow when I can take a look at the wiring diagram I have and inside the headlight shell to make sure I get it all correct. It's all quite easy and straightforward really - took me a while to figure it out as was bit nervous of making a cockup.

Your a star Pat thanks very much, fitted LED brake light and rear light purchased from Paul Geoff but the indicators has been waiting in the wings! Looked at a 12volt conversion but a bit price, so fitted the above, electronic reg box and also a 12 amp hour battery as every bit helps.
So that's a pint I owe you at least, so if you ever get to MZ Notts/Derby section or going to the Eastern Block Rally at Bourne Lin's let me know.

Now then, to continue the wiring. Didn't have to alter the wiring much as the indicator circuit is pretty straightforward. The only stumbling block is the low charge warning light which is connected to one of the flasher unit connections. One person on a forum stated disconnect the warning light connection from 49a and reconnect to 15 - I managed to identify 49a but couldn't find 15. The wiring diagram in my workshop manual shows terminal 15 but it's not clear exactly which one that is on the ignition switch. I ended up connecting the warning light to the other terminal on the flasher unit and it doesn't interfere with the flasher unit as being led it is polarity sensitive but still comes on when the revs drop right down indicating that the battery is no longer charging. Well chuffed with the brighter indicators.

Forgot to add - my indicators are connected via an ordinary electrical connector block inside the headlight shell so each indicator warning lamp was connected to this (one for each side) and earth. I mounted both the warning lamp holders into the back of the headlight shell so they're both visible whilst I'm riding the bike.

Have since removed the complete 6 volt system and fitted a 12 volt Power Dynamo system. I have fitted 12 volt led indicator bulbs and an led flasher unit and find them excellent! The flasher unit has an inbuilt beeper which, whilst a tad annoying, does remind me on the odd occasion that I've left the indicators on!
