A sad tale and request for help please - Skorpion

Postby Manx Skorpy » Sun Nov 09, 2014 2:42 pm

Hi Folks

I'm from the Isle of Man (yay!) and my best mate had a Skorpion, yellow with fairing, is that a Sport? - I say had, as he was unfortunately killed in a freak low speed accident last TT week on another bike. I think he had posted on here occasionally. :( RIP, Gaz.

The Skorpy has been left to a friend in England and I have been keeping it going for my pal's widow until it can be taken across. It has always fired up no problem until....the last time, when nothing at all happened on pressing the starter button. Everything else works, battery is charged, but there is one odd thing, the high beam comes on if you pull the clutch in and press the starter button. Any ideas where to start? The solenoid isn't clicking in, nothing at all happens.

I'm quite savvy with bike mechanics but on Hondas and old Beemers....this MuZ/Yam thing is all new to me.

Cheers

Neil

Check the ground from the battery to the frame.

read about the relay 19 problem its also labeled 30 on some drawings maybe 21 on some

it controls electric to the whole bike and with some diodes the sidestand switch and neutral lamp
as a safety switch
on the one your working on there may be a switch on the clutch lever if it was raced
it will be wired so bike can be cranked if clutch is pulled in
the clutch sw is not on any mz i have but may be on some models

also check the big relay under the seat for the stater its coil may have gone bad

the relay 19 is about 1 inch by1 inch by 3/4 inch

can be replaced by a relay from halfords that has 5 lugs a double pole single throw

Halfords HEF557 Relay 12V 30A 5 PIN

Hi David, some useful tips there, I will have a check through that relay. The bike hasn't been raced, it's a standard road bike bar the loudest pipe I have ever heard - no MOT's here! No Halfords either for that matter, but I should be able to source a relay from the interweb.

Cheers

Neil

PS - It definitely has a switch on the clutch lever.

PS - It definitely has a switch on the clutch lever.

this helps for a quick re start if your stalled in traffic

no hunting for neutral so the button works

i do not think my traveller has it but to lazy to crawl off to the shop to look tonight

my git up and go seems to fall on its ares earlier in the day than it used too

Agreed - get up and go went when I turned 50!

Could anyone guide me to this relay please? Is it under the tank?

You have tried the kill switch on the right handlebar and the sidestand switch on the sidestand?

It is under the seat - runs to the battery
All the best

Turns out the issue is a short in the l/h switch gear - it is a bit slack on the bar and had twisted when turning the cho0ke on. Pushing it back has stopped the headlight coming on when pulling the clutch, and it now fires up! Horrayy! Gary's widow was pleased, he left the bike to a pal in England and he'll be coming to ride it TT week.
