ETZ 250 Switchgear / Levers

Postby Cerberus73 » Sat Mar 15, 2014 4:41 pm

Right gonna ask your tips regarding painting/refinishing the switchgear of my new to me ETZ 250.. generally the bike is in great shape, except that some of the restoration work done by the previous owner or owners is looking tatty, the paint on the master cylinder for the front brake is all flaky and bare oxidised aluminium is showing where the blacks chipped off. same on the other side but not so badly. i know it can be a right pain in the arse to get paint to stick to raw aluminium.

The frame and swingarm, even the tank and side panels seem to have been powder coated. its a shame he didn't do the same on the switchgear etc. has anybody had to refinish there switches? i have ordered black satin chip resistant paint from a supplier, and black heatproof satn as well as high temp silver (I'm refinishing the engine side covers and barrel/head as theres a few chips/stains) these along with the switchgear and a couple of wrinkles on the seat cover where it was badly fitted are the only things letting the bike down cosmetically.. mechanically other than a slight drip from the fuel tap (knackered washer, the one with 4 holes in it.. got one coming in post, and gonna fit new fuel line to carb from tank as well) any tips for making sure the paint sticks like shit to a blanket.. instead of going flaky again would be gratefully received.

Also does anyone know of a tallish screen that will fit an early ETZ 250? i don't want a cafe racer type, or the later saxon type, and something taller than a flyscreen. it needs to offer some proper weather/wind protection. please note i am in the UK. so uk or european suppliers please.

I used hammerite on mine  Even on the levers, and it has stuck well. Though you can see the brush strokes

What you want is an etch primer. I got a can of clear aluminium etch primer for my local paint suppliers. Alternatively something like this would work. strip the old paint off, wire brush the surface to get rid of all the fluff and give a couple of coats of primer
