Locks chains anchors alarms immobilisers and trackers

Postby den » Sat Jun 08, 2013 3:03 pm

So , I'm starting a new thread marked security,, If anyones seen my video you would have noticed i got locks and chains coming out my ears.Where i live bolting it down "is just a challenge" people here walk the streets with generators and grinders on wheelbarrows, cutting torches in wheelie bins, and white vans with built in hoists,,

So i bought myself a gps tracking device from ebay , basically, when this device is fitted all i do is txt a request to the simcard(not supplied) and it replies with a longitude and latitude in which i add to google earth and it locates my bike for me ,,the system works on gprs too , so with a little setup it should work on my pc with out any texting..I've opened the box and had a quick look ,the unit itself is the size of a cigarette packet so it will easily fit in the airbox wrapped in a bag,. you got panic switch, two door triggers,(mybe fit one on a mercury tilt switch??,theres an output to a siren?power leads, and a relay to shut anything off via txt command, you get gsm and gprs antennas, also with a built in battery.
so if anyone's familiar with the iphones "find my iphone"app, this works the same way,
Fortunately for us in the uk most 3g sim cards revert to 2g when theres no 3g signal,,these trackers only work on 2g so check your area/location and mobile service providers to see if they still provide 2g,,i got myself a giffgaff sim and bought £10 credit, should last me a year,,
So , this is as far as i have got , i'm going to try and get it set up on the bench first before i fit it to the bike so i'll keep you all posted,,at the end if i'm successful i'll provide you with my tracking telephone number so you can dial in and see it working,,
anyone else got any good security ideas,

oh my god , this tracker is amazing,Modern technology at a fraction of the price for something thats top end security,,It was plug and play to start receiving txt messages from the sim for the bikes(trackers)location but a little bit of playing around understanding the commands to get it to work online under gprs, but i sussed it out and it works a treat , i've not concealed it on the bike yet but the airbox seems a great location with the ariel for the txting up front just inside the headlight fairing and the gprs antenna just at the back of the seat stuck to the rear mudguard,
here are some screenshots of the device and the txt message you get when you ring it and the online screenshot when you want to track where its been or where its going in real time, there are so many things this can do , i can phone it up and listen to the mike,,i can have it txt me when it goes over a set kph limit, geo fencing,, txt me if it goes out of a selected area,, i got mine set to txt me if it moves more than 20 metres from standstill(parked up)..ill know its gone before i get back to the bike , i can even send a txt to sound an alarm or kill the engine, awesome ,

I'm impressed!! But why hasn't anyone else other than one commented? It really is food for thought. Eric

dave, everyone ,Just like a old cell phone this technology only works on 2g ( gps ), were now in an age of 3g and 4g ,, here in the uk we still use 2g as a backup when 3g fails ,im unsure if 2g is still available across the pond , some of the ads on ebay will state "check this before purchasing",, my tracker is the best purchase for my bike so far,,ok so its easily thwarted if the thieves are clever enough.just cut the aerials off and you got no signal,,but a little bit of security is better than none at all,,

have a ham radio licence so i may look into a thing called
APRS it can display location of bike at my home on a laptop
and i can use one of the old 2 meter radios i have laying around
to run it
and it has no operating cost like a cell does
dave

i will also see the lady at the at&t store and see if they offer something like this
my cell phone is bare bones and costs USD$ 106 a year but i do not talk on it very much
