6 volt regulator

Postby marsh15086 » Sun Apr 21, 2013 4:24 pm

hi friend can anyone explain to me what a 6 volt regulator is for and how i can test mine to make sure it works. i have a mz ts 125cc sport that has not run for a while. i have done a few repairs which are- rewired the bike added new resistor, spark plug and new battery and rewired the old on off swith also cleaned carb. bike will not start i am trying to find the fault. i have also checked bike with multi meter and all circuts are working it has good compression, the 6 volt coil gives a good spark when conected straight to battery. any ideas welcome.
Many Thanks
Cheers allan

Lots of good info on the mechanical regulator: http://www.sweller.co.uk/mz/electrics/dyn_wrdia.html

If you think yours isn't working, probably easier to buy one of the newer solid-state versions (less than $20) because tuning the mechanical reg is a serious pain.

Yes - just buy a modern one! A duff regulator shouldn't stop your bike running though - it only controls the charging circuit. They are about £25 in the uk . Phil at"the MZ shop" has them.

hi Allan,
check the `on off` switch wiring, if your getting a healthy spark when you connect the battery directly to the coil, this indicates that there is no feed/ voltage getting to the coil via the ignition switch :(
also check that the ignition timming is correct. an after a lay up starting tip, dribble a little fuel directly in to the cylinder befor starting, it may even benifit from being bump started so that ALL the battery power is there for the ignition system.
good luck & safe riddings
cheers Eric.
