Carbs Are They Good For You?

Postby dwc » Sun Dec 04, 2011 11:04 am

Afternoon,

I'm still battling to get my Etz 250 running, but keep running into problems.

Todays escapades include the following. Your thoughts on the problems would of course be welcome.

Firstly, having rebuilt the master cylinder and had a new braided pipeline added I anticipated an easy job fitting the brakes and bleeding them. Wrong!!!! On staritng to bleed the brakes I noticed fluid leaking from the area around the lever. Closer inspection revealed that the fluid was moving past the seal when the piston was depressed. Has anyone else had this problem? Also which way should the seal go in? The one I have has a solid side and a recessed side showing the lip of rubber that is supposed to seal against the piston. Help!!!!!

Secondly, while fulminating over the brake dillema I decided to have another go at starting the bike. I have purchased a new ht lead and thought this would help, I even recharged the battery. As before nothing, not even a cough in recognition of my efforts.

I decided this time to revisit the the carb. With Haynes manual in one hand and carb in the other I quicly deduced that some bright spark had removed the main jet from the needle jet. Could this be the source of my woes? When I checked the carb it was remarlably dry inside, as if fuel wasn't reaching the parts required. Just to clarify should there be a needle housed in the needle jet? Is it esential to have the main jet and what does it do?

I look forward to some helpful advice.

The needle and main jet are both essential, yes. If neither are present the vacuum at part throttle will be insufficient to draw petrol into the carbs throat. Is there petrol in the float chamber? Any other bits missing? Is it a BVF or Bing carb?
I would try to find another brake master cylinder if possible as they tend to leak where the reservoir meets the aluminium body as well. Maybe Burwins in London can suggest an alternative or you could ask on the yahoo group (search the forum for a link). Maybe a Grimeca off a later model Kanuni would be better.

David,
Thanks for the reply.
The Carb is a BVF and I am getting fuel into the float chamber, so with the right part that issue should be sorted.

I have a Grimeca on the bike. I didn't realise the cylinder go leak like that, so an alternative could be a good way to go.
