125 saxon sportstar-no spark

Postby kwakkers1951 » Tue Sep 13, 2011 7:31 am

I've jusy got a 1998 model of above to renovate for my brother in law. He was given it 'cause the previous owner couldn't get it started a couple of years ago, and so abandonned it in his garage. Find that the 'points' are driven by the generator, via a printed circuit board to a (pulse) pickup on the rotor, and then cable to the coil. Have had a number of bikes over the years, but no experience of this type of electronic ignition. Have ordered a new plug, but don't think that current is getting from the pick-up. Can't source a new (pref 2nd hand to keep cost down). Can anyone help? Also does anyone know of a supplier who can sell decals for this bike. If I can't sort the spark problem, I'll have to scrap it, which is a shame because the rest is complete & easily brought back to a decent life!

Sounds like a Pirana or Boyer B system, Boyer are still very much about - give them a call.

Decals from Fred Rodgers or online try ebay.

The crankseals will in all likelyhood need doing.

best of luck

Not having experience with the Saxon Sportstar, but if all else fails you could fit the earlier ETZ 125 points ignition unit, Fred Rodgers would be able to advise.

Hi. Thanks for advice. Have since proven that deffo. the pickup-coil component is at fault, & found stamp on stator for a company called PVL (German), with model numbers etc.. Have been put in touch with a very helpfull chap/company called Alan Whitton, who mainly deals with race-bike ignition systems, but does know of PVL, and purchases from them. He is contacting them anyway, & asking some questions on my behalf, hopefully to get a solution. Pete
