Right hand light switch

Postby Fluffy_Dog_1018 » Sun Dec 05, 2010 8:40 am

Hi, thinking of using light switch on right handle bar to control some auxiliary lighting on my bike. As mine is a US bike it appears that this switch is disabled i.e. headlight is always on. Anyone have experience using this switch to do what I am thinking about? I'd rather use it than add a switch to the console. Thanks.

Here in the UK we are able to switch the lights off and on with this switch. I've copied the connections from the wiring diagram:
rhs switch.jpg

Sorry it's not very clear, but hopefully clear enough to understand.
The light switch (5) obtains switched +12V from pin 9 red/black wire (rt/sw). This is the same supply as the brake switch (9 on the diagram).
When the switch is in the 'P' position, power is connected to pin 1 black/white wire (sw/ws), and when in 'H' position it is also connected to pin 3 white wire (ws).
Hope this helps,

Norman

when you decide where to hook for the switched power
do use a relay to power the added items.
drawing very much power threw the switch is not
a good idea

Hi Norman, thanks for the diagram it will get me started.

Dave, yes I plan to use the switch only to control a relay I have wired (via fuse) to the battery.

I was thinking about doing the same thing with my '02 Tour. I haven't checked the wiring continuity from the switch yet. The switch throw feels very loose on mine. It slides back and forth without and real positive snapping into place. I'm not sure it opens or closes any contacts. I bought some LED lights and a handle bar mount switch from Trail-Tech. I'd rather use the stock switch if I can.

The switch is a real switch with wires terminating in the headlamp cowl, but as Dave has said, the switch should only be used for very low current (maybe 1A) and/or to control a relay.
