2001 Traveller Fuel coming from everywhere!

Postby Fluffy_Dog_1018 » Tue Nov 02, 2010 3:27 pm

2001 660 Traveller 14K miles.

First thanks to the members of this board for suggestions on fixing the stripped nuts in my Traveller tank. It is perfect now.

So I hooked up the repaired tank (fuel line from petcock to carb and vent line from tank to "T" line at canister). Then I put in maybe 2 gallons of fuel. When I turn the ignition "on" I get a steady stream of fuel coming out of the vent line which dumps from the cut off valve to the area just in front of the rear tire. The canister fills with fuel as does the bottom inch of the airbox! Also fuel is dripping from the intake boot to the carb! Holy crap there is fuel everywhere... no time to even think about starting the motor.

I can only guess that something is up with the cut off valve... I mean why is it pumping fuel out when I turn on the ignition? I have the vacuum hose diagram and everything seems to be hooked up correctly.

I am used to bikes with a vacuum petcock and this fuel everywhere is freaking me out.

Anyone familiar with the situation?

Thanks.

Sounds like the float is stuck down in the open position. With the float bowl full of gas,try lightly tapping on the float bowl with the end of a ratchet or wrench to jar the float loose.
If that does not work you might have to pull the carb and remove the float bowl to clean out the dryed fuel residue and look for an obstruction in the needle and seat for the float.

Ditch the fuel pump..gravity works just fine on these bikes. That way you can do away with all the emissions junk..
After removi ng the pump,if you turn the petcock on and it still over flows then yep your float on the left carb is stuck.
If the bike has been sitting with fuel in the carb, you most likely will have much goo in the left carb...you can remove the float
bowl without removing the carb if you take the starter motor out.this will give you room.I'd fill the bowl with Seafoam first through
the fuel line and let sit for awhile to get the goo, then drain..
If you remove the bowl,I'd also replace those philips head screws with allen head screws...
Good luck!!

Hey thanks for your feedback.

Went to take the starter out... looks like two 8M bolts holding the right side down, no problem. Also two long thin bolts (maybe M5) running parallel with the starter, also no problem. No obvious way (to me at least) on how the starter comes out with these 4 bolts removed... are there more? Do I need to do anything on the left side at the case? Thanks.

Before removing the starter,do the Seaform and tap the bowl first, also, like I said fuel pump not needed.
to remove the starter, disconnect the battery first, then the leads to the starter, then two 8mm bolts (right side) should pull out from the
right.
note: Those bowl screws may be real tough to get out if they've been sitting unmolested for years
How long has the bike been sitting?

The last inspection sticker on the bike is from 2002 so sitting for 6-7 years is my guess. The bike was under a cover in a city garage so the exterior is like new. I suspect there is a lot of crud in the bowl so I want to clean it out before going further. I guess I just need to be more persuasive on getting the starter out?

Yes already in touch with a couple MZ riders in the area, thanks!

Forget the starter,if it has been that long under wraps, the fuel has most definitely gone off to jelly land...pull the carbs and clean...I would imagine all sorts
of crud in there..even if you got it running,it wouldn't be long before it would clog....
There is a thread in the 660 forum about a Bp with carb issues, go there..good pictures, good diagrams etc.
note: caution when removing float pin..there is an arrow on the posts that holds the pin..it points in the direction of removal!!
you'll have to pull the float to check the needle and seat, also there is a tiny screen filter attached to the seat, remove the chrome philips head screw and
pull the seat, you'll see it..it DOES get crud...and will create all sorts of running problems.
Hope this helps..good luck

I can't handle the truth! OK OK I'll pull the carbs. Thanks for the extra suggestions as well. Will look for that link. Hope to report back in a week.

Thanks!
