r6 swing arm/front end for a new frame

Postby droy » Wed Nov 21, 2007 9:09 pm

Folks,

Well I picked up a Skorpion frame, sub frame and triple clamp (with clear TX title) for the cost of 3 cases of good beer on flea bay. Assuming its straight I going to embark on a long term project to add another Skopion to my garage. At this point I'm considering building it into a light weight Sunday AM scratcher and track bike.

Thanks to Bill and others I aware of some of the wheel opions using stock forks and swing arm like the tz250r/tz250, yzf, and others but I figure it's easier to do an entire front and rear replacement.

I considering a Yamaha R6 front end and rear subframe with wheels ( 99-02). It sounds like others have done simular conversions with a limited amount of machineing, bearing replacement, and shock rebuild. The parts can also be had on ebay for about $500-800 and sound like their light weight. I've also considered a 03-07 R6 set up but not sure if the rear swing arm will fit.

Looking for advise for these mods or some other complete suspension replacement ( available in the US). I've also considered parts from a Aprilia rs250, cbr600 F3 or Ducati Monster but I'm not sure if there as cost effective or light weight.

Thanks in advance

Doug

The guy that first did this to a Skorpion frame is a friend of ours from the USA. I will ask if it's ok to pass on his e-mail and you can talk to him direct. He has tried and tested lots of mods to the Skorpion chassis. He even has Titanium swingarm pivots, etc. He has modified the swingarm to fit, making it even lighter too. He has also fitted various R6 front ends, in fact if i remember rightly the forks you have coming will go straight into your frame. One problem was that the later forks didn't have the correct off-set or the clip-ons hit the race fairing or something like that, but the earlier forks were fine...i'm sure that's how it went. I was going to do this conversion earlier this year but as usual the workshop has been busier and busier so i simply haven't had time to work it out! I will be back soon once i get an answer from Jeff. Believe me this guys about as good as it gets...he has some amazing CNC machines, etc and boy does he know how to use them. This guy is a first class engineer, blows socks of anyone on this forum i have to say! :-D

I have tried mate, but he is mega busy, he works for General Motors..in a manner of speaking! The problem is Jeffs even more flat out than all of Slipstream put together. He's an awesome guy with such an amazing level of knowledge. He's actually an ex USAF Fighter pilot, i love talking with him as he's an excellent source of knowledge and he explains things so well. I will try and get him to maybe chat on here, if not i could ask him to write a few articles for us. I'm sure he would love to chat with you all but he simply has so many things on the go...he's got more projects than i've had hot dinners! :-D

I will persue and see what we can do... ;-)

OK, just got an e-mail back from Jeff and this is what he said:

"No worries, I’ll shoot some pictures for you. It’s a very simple modification. The 05 fork are a straight bolt-on swap however the late model 06/07 R6 fork requires some machining on the steering stem as they increase the lower bearings ID. I have used both and will write up a little article for you with pictures for you to post. I’ll do the same for the swingarm mods."

So there you have it...straight from the horses mouth(so-to-speak), once Jeff has sent me the write-up i will post the articles for you so sit tight and be patient Grasshoppers... :-D

It'll be worth waiting for, he's a legend!

Still tring to figure this rear swing arm conversion and found some good info on http://www.fzrarchives.com (rumer is that early FZR600 swingarms with the center removed is the same as the MuZ Skorpion). http://www.fzrarchives.com/fzr600/work_ ... 0Swap.html

So the question is can someone give me the diameter of the rear engine MuZ 660 swing arm pivot hole that runs through the back of the engine.

Thanks

Doug
