MZ TS 125 - Do I need to replace the cranks seals?

Postby wood-gee » Wed Sep 09, 2015 4:45 pm

Hi, I'm Jake, and new to this forum, although I've lurked on it a few times previously. As a bit about myself, I bought a MZ TS125 that had been sat in a garden for 15 year about 6 months ago and have been trying to get it back on the road. It had a standing seizure, so I changed the piston and rings, gave it a clean up as best as I could, rewired it, put a new battery in tried my luck, but haven't been able to get it to run for love nor money.

I was wondering if anyone may be able to advise me as to whether I should really just bite the bullet, strip the engine and replace the crank seals, or whether I may have missed something obvious that's preventing it running. As a bit of further detail on the matter, the bike has a nice fat blue spark, timing seems about right, I gave the carb a strip and clean and that seemed all good (although await a new rubber plunger for the choke as that had perished) and compression feels ok from a 'put your finger over the plug hole' test so from that side of things all seems ok.

Any thoughts?

Cheers
Jake

if points and seals sat for 15 years they both need changed

the spring in the points looses its temper over time and even if it starts OK will probably not run correct

as the points will float at speed

seals would probably go in 15 years wither it run or set

if i found a brand new 250 in a crate from say 1982 i would do new seals and points before even trying to start it

and new piston rings as they have lost there temper most likely as well as the points

and a note on 4 stroke bikes take the plugs out and warm the cylinders up with heat lamps slowly
to bake the moisture out from behind the valve seats
i have had to do head repair on several old BMW bikes that were long time setters when owners started them before calling me "to hear the details"
of how to start a long time setter

Thanks, in that case I'll definitely go ahead and do it. Cheers for the advice!
