Throttle Assembly

Postby suzukix7 » Thu Jun 26, 2014 11:48 am

Hi guys,
My throttle was not snapping back to the closed position, there was an end bar mirror fitted to the end of the handlebars that seemed to be fouling the throttle return.
When I took the mirror off the throttle slide just fell off!!! I cant work out how it stays in place.

There is 2 grub screws, one on the throttle itself and one on the handlebar clamp with a locking nut.
Neither of which seem to do anything to be honest.
Is it just the cable that stops the slide from falling off?

Any help would be appreciated

Dave :(

What you need, young man, is a manual of some description!

But in the meantime, the throttle is held together either by a bar end mirror or by an end-stop and spacer ( parts 17 and 18) . The end-stop is held in place by a screw which goes through the handlebar ( not shown in the picture).

 A manual is on it's way lol.
Many thanks for the reply.
It seems so strange that a bar end mirror or an end cap holds the throttle tube in place as this seems to stop the throttle snapping back to a closed position when you let go!! I was just wondering what the grub screw with locking nut do that is mounted on the bracket of the throttle twist grip?

That sounds very like the friction adjustment. Inside the housing is a curved spring type thingy ( It's late and Ive just finished a nice bottle of wine!) The grub screw can be adjusted to change the drag on the throttle, so when you let go of the throttle it doesn't have to snap shut. There should be a Top hat type spacer fitted when a bar end mirror is fitted to allow the throttle to close without excessive drag ( part 19 on the diagram i posted earlier)

is it detramental that the throttle snaps shut ?

( I finally found out what that piece of metal was for, that was
adrift inside of the housing.)

Tanks buddy, yes I thought the spring clip may have been a friction adjuster but wasn't sure!!!

In terms of throttle snapping shut, it is an MOT requirement to ensure your throttle doesn't stick open should you part company with your pride and joy.

Thanks for the replies guys, much appreciated

I don't think so, most old brit bikes had a similar set up and I assumed it was so you could take your hand off the throttle to signal a right turn, without the bike lurching to a halt!
