Speed wobble ? HELP

Postby Noodles36 » Wed May 21, 2014 12:44 pm

Hello to one and all ,

I picked up a 1981 MZ250 Ts with a sidecar .

Got her starting and running for the first time today . Took it for a little spin up the road just to see how she would go , in first gear and just taking off " she goes into a speed wobble" as in the handles bars giggle left to right " the faster I went the more violent it got . I didn't oust my luck .

Would any one have any ideas / help , has it happened to any other MZ owners ? Would it have something to do with the side car ?

Any help welcome .

They all do that Sir! Usually you can accelerate through it but sometimes it can be nasty!. Does the bike have a steering damper? If so screw it down to make the steering stiffer. If not you need one! Probably worth checking the alignment of the sidecar

check tyre pressure all 3 tyres
also jack up front end and check the fork neck bearings for excess play
and the rear swing arm and bearings

and do a good all over inspection

each setup is its own and 2 bikes set up the same will almost never ride the same...

and i never give out test rides

every time i have been at a rally and some one crashes a rig it is usually not his machine..
my advice is NO TEST RIDES

Many thanks David ,

Just had a quick inspection on the bike and straight away I seen the steering damper is knackerd " as in no friction " it's seen better days , it will need to be replaced anyway ,,

If the damper is all there all you need to do is replace the friction disc. Made one out of a large cutting disc many years ago. Tight? Me ??????
