Etz 250 Transmission

Postby dwc » Fri Nov 04, 2011 1:08 pm

Hi,
I'm well into tidying up my Mz ETZ 250 and it wont be long beforeit is running, however I drained the gear oil today after following the Haynes manual by removing the two drain plugs. Firstly why two? Secondly the smaller of the two is fitted with a spring and I think a ball bearing, which I discovered in the drain pan.

Does anyone have the answers? I'm intrigued about the bearing or am I barking up the wrong tree.

I await with baited breath.

Hi the gear box does indeed have two parts to drain, the large bolt underneath and the lower screw behind the gear lever, are the draining holes.

The small bolt underneath with the spring and ball bearing is the gear selector locator,
you don't undo this,
If you haven't moved the gear lever you should be able to put the ball bearing and spring back in.

I recommend you use the proper works manual, not the Haynes book of lies.

two bolts underneath the engine the one with magnet attached to it is drain plug other one is I think for neutral gear DO NOR REMOVE IT and then you should have bolt in clutch cover to drain oil from clutch compartment

I think you may have miss-read the Haynes, I have used it for years and recall nothing about removing the neutral selector. Anyway so long as you haven't changed the gears pop it back in ball bearing on top of the spring and screw it up.

There is no need to remove the gear lever, there will be enough play to get the screw out. Once the main drain has stopped running it is worth popping the bike on its sidestand just to get the last out of the clutch cover.

Use a decent oil, I use SIlkolene light gear oil and that works well.

Where abouts are you?

Thank you one and all.

I did indeed miss read the manual, although I must have done that several times.

Luckily I haven't played with the gear selector and I did put it back as the atheist East German engineer intended. Hopefully all should be well.

It's a pity there is no mention of this or a diagram depicting said plug / spring and bearing. in the manual of Haynes.

I knew joining this site would be a good idea!!!!!!!.

I'm in the Slough area.
