MZ restoration project

Postby bensbike » Mon Jul 01, 2013 4:14 pm

Hi. I have just bought a 1988 etz 125. It is a non runner so just about to go through usual issues starting with spark. As I am completely new to this was wondering if anyone could answer some basic questions about the bike.
1. I see there is an oil tank. Do I still premix oil and fuel? If so, any particular type of two stroke oil and at what ratio? Does the tank work by oil pump or drawn through by induction?
2. Does the bike run ok on unleaded?
3. What type of gearbox oil does the bike use?
Sure there are lots more issues to come but ill start with the basics. Plan is a ground up restoration once I have a running engine.
Cheers.

Oil is fed via a pump under the "MZ" labelled cover at the front L/H side of the engine. There's a cable from the throttle grip going into the pump under there too. Line up the marks under there when the engine's ticking over. There's no need to premix fuel.

A mineral two stroke oil is fine for an ETZ125, semi synth or full synth is overkill. Anything with a Jaso FB or higher rating will work well.

Unleaded, yes, normal 95 rather than super unleaded works best.

Gearbox oil is straight EP80. Don't use GL5, it'll erode the bushes in the box over time. GL4 is fine.

And one thing - it'll need a battery before you'll see a spark, the ignition system doesn't self-energise like you see on small Japanese bikes.

Thanks for the advice. Really helpful. Wiring is a nightmare-lots of modifications by previous owners most of which are dead! Think first step will be to create new ignition wiring from scratch to get spark and go from there. Looks like I'm in for the long haul.

Its always worth checking that the oil pump is still
1) There
2) Connected!

With the cover off you will be able to see if the cable is connected to the pump, and rotates as the throttle is opened
ES250 Doppelport, ES250, ES250/1, ES250/2,ETS 250, ES150, ETS150, BK350, IWL Pitty, SR56 Wiesel, SR59 Berlin, Troll............ and thats just the German two strokes!
