A proper C spanner does make tightening it easier, tighten it as tight as you can by hand, then give the end of the spanner a belt with a hammer. Some people coat the thread in silicone sealant so that it makes a carbon seal , Ive never tried it myself. Had the exhaust drop of a YB100 once, got some odd looks riding it to a bike shop to get a new gasket!
