Rattling front brake etz251

Postby thomaskwscott » Tue Feb 26, 2013 9:11 am

Hi guys,

My etz failed its mot a code of weeks ago because of a leaky fork seal that dropped oil all over the front caliper. I have since had the pads changed but now there is a very unsettling rattle that appears to come from one of the pads being loose. The bike brakes ok but it's getting louder and making me very nervous, is this a known issue?

Thanks

Tom

You did replace the anti rattle spring on top of the pads.

Hi guys,

I just had a quick look at the spring. It is fitted correctly but seems to have enough play to allow the pads to rattle. The thing that worries me is that the rattle is rhythmic in time with the turning of the front wheel. Could this be an indication of a warped disc?

Thanks

More likely something to do with the new pads or the fitting of them if it didn't do it before.

Do the pads pull back when you release the brake, no drag on the disc, if you have drag you need to clean the brake's piston's, also you could try bending slightly the anti rattle spring to put more tension on the pads.

If you are not comfortable doing it yourself take the bike back to who ever fitted the pads, and tell them you are not happy with the way they are now.

I had a warped disc once and you will hear it. It will be a regular binding of the brake on, then off, then on, then off schoof schoof schoof.

Hi guys,

The schoof schoof schoof sound is exactly what I am hearing. In fact when I spin the wheel slowly I can see it pick up the pad, drag it then release it. This doesn't seem to affect my braking at all and the pads don't bind after braking. Unfortunately I wouldn't know if it was happening before as previously I had a broken fork seal that had saturated the pads in oil. It sounds like I'm in the market for a new disc.

Thanks

Hi

I don`t think a slightly warped disc is reason to change it.
I take it the pads were not changed by the same garage that did the Mot?

The question is, does she stop clean or does she shudder and throw her head about.
If the former I wouldn't be too concerned, if the latter you need to change the disc.

Check that one of the caliper pistons is not siezed.
The noise of a 'rattle' was caused by a single pinton sizure on my ETZ.
The working piston drives the disc into contact tith the non moving one making the 'rattling ' noise.
The road goes on forever.
