Clutch cover removal ETZ 251

Postby tonyc » Sun Jan 27, 2013 11:56 am

Is there a trick to removing the clutch cover that I am missing? I have removed the kick start the gear leaver and the oil pump. The oil hoses are removed also. A screw is stuck on the clutch inspection plate. Do I need to get that off before I start with the big cover?

Yup you have to remove the cover AND the nut/tacho drive behind it before you can remove the cover!

Before you use the drill, try applying heat, as this will expand the alloy casing more than the steel screw, this should make it easier undo.

Never had one of them stick in all my years of MZing. Not one of the ones I would recommend using an impact driver on either

I have striped it down after freeing the stuck item with a center punch! I have two new questions. How tight should the nut have been that secures the primary drive gear? It was only hand tight. I also now need to know how to remove the faulty seal. Do I just prize it out?

Ever thought of buying a manual? :-D . The MZ Riders Club do a reprint of the original

Or there are always Haynes book of lies available on eBay

Anyway the tacho drive/clutch retaining nut should be very tight... 70ft/lb springs to mind. For this you need to lock the crank. Probably rope down the plug hole is the easiest way
Primary drive nut 40ft/lb, and should have a tab washer behind it
I assume its the crank seal you are replacing? If so remove clutch with the proper clutch puller, dont forget to use the protector for the nose on the crank. Then remove the circlip that locates the seal. I then bash the seal a couple of times with a screw driver to distort it and pull it out. new seal has to be driven is square just far enough to allow the circlip to be refitted . Make sure it seats properly. Then clean the taper on both the clutch centre and the crankshaft really well ( I use meths) and reassemble
