ES250 GEARBOX

Postby 1910richard » Sat Dec 22, 2012 3:01 pm

Can anyone out there offer any suggestions as to what to look for when I strip my 1972 ES250 gearbox. the problem does not cause me an awful lot of trouble but is annoying and needs sorting. It occasionally especially when hot will jump out of third gear on acceleration. Also sometimes when changing down it will go straight through a gear out the other side into a neutral. Any ideas?
I also have put up with the gearbox being very clonky and slow but this is possibly how they are. Is there any way of improving this?

Hi Richard.
I can't help with how to sort your box out but I can tell you that they are very clunky and slow when they are right! Change gear slowly and they will go into gear but they are nothing like a jap bike (or a brit for that matter). The massive gap between third and fourth is normal too so don't worry about that. I did have an ETZ that had gearbox issues a while ago and that was jumping out of 2nd - turned out to be the dog that was worn. The box isn't complex and I would think that any problems would be obvious when it's in bits but I'm scared of gear boxes so I have never dismantled my Trophy one!
