Very Sticky Clutch

Postby thomaskwscott » Thu Jun 14, 2012 6:30 am

Hi Guys,

I recently change the clutch plates on my ETZ 251 and now it is impossible to get into neutral (it was never that easy to be fair). During normal riding the clutch is fine and it holds at the lights no problem with the clutch in but will never go to neutral. The wierd thing is, when the bike has been stood for any period of time the clutch is always stuck and i need to put the bike in gear and rock it forward and back with the clutch in to free it before starting it. If i don't do this when i put it in gear to clutch will catch and the bike will stall.

Is this normal? Can i fix it without losing the clutch operation i have now?

Thanks

Tom

had a Yamaha in 1996 that had a problem with going in neutral
when i got it adjusted so neutral could be found it wood slip at speed

turns out the lever was not pulling the cable far enough to get clutch free enough to find neutral

i had to bend the lever out from the bar a bit so it could pull cable farther
are you using the correct oil also in the transmission

also test clutch springs that all are same pressure

My ETZ251 has a simular problem. I find you can put it into neutral as your rolling to a stop, or when the engine has stopped. I find its always better after I've adjusted the clutch in the following way, slacken the cable at the handle bar end.
undo the tacho drive and turn the slotted disc fully anti clockwise. Re-attach the tacho drive, and adjust the clutch cable at the handle bar. To free the clutch after the bike has been standing, I pull the clutch in, and turn the engine over. As the kick starter operates through the clutch this will seperate the plates.

Hi Guys,

Thanks for the advice, i too had issues with the clutch slipping at high revs previously (hence the plate change). I an now satisfied that the bite point is where i like it so maybe the answer is to get a new lever i will try to get an adjustable one and let you know.

I am hoping the plates are just a little sticky because they are new, the adjuster is already at full (or zero depending which way you look at it) adjustment and cannot move. I will however check it this weekend.

One thing i think may be causing the problem is i have a bigger rear wheel and a 2" lift that tips the whole of the bike forward (see pic). Could that mean the clutch is sitting in more oil than it is expecting and is swelling when stood?

Just wondering, what weight gearbox oil are you using?

its EP80 gear oil.

This problem is fixed now by the way. Muggins here massively overfilled the bike with oil, i have drained the excess off and it's great now.
