Exhaust Port Threads

Postby DessieH » Tue Aug 09, 2011 11:29 am

Hi all,
I notice quite a few warnings about being careful with your exhaust port threads as steel going into aluminium can easily deform the threads. Well, that's exactly the problem I have (done by some idiot before me) and the threads, while not totally wrecked, are seriously cross-threaded. I haven't noticed any tips to rectify this. I'm also finding it difficult and expensive to find a tool to recut internal threads. What can I do?

Have you tried a thread restoring file? You can buy as a metric set.

the threader you need should be on the side of file at end
you will see how it goes when its in hand
and they weren't cheap years ago so brace your self
might see if a shop or jobber rents them by the day
take pipe nut with you so you get one with the correct size

I would have thought a heli-coil would be the easiest solution:

Stephenonz and David,
Firstly, the grooves in the file run lenghtwise, no grooves run sideways. If they did run sideways you could get the file at the threads internally. The only possibility with the file would be to cut the end off and turn it 90 degrees. That's a lot easier said than done as the file is hardened steel. As for inserts I haven't found any bigger than about 12mm. They seem to be produced for the more common sizes, and 50x 1.5 is very uncommon.
Thanks for your suggestions.

Guys,
I have found a solution ! I could see that some of thethreads were flattened just after the first two, so I started with a dremel saw to cut out the worst of the flattening. I then cut off the end of the restoration file, ending up with a piece just over 46mm long (ie just long enough to fit neatly into the hole sideways), clamped it with a vicegrip, making a tee shape, inserted it into the hole and worked it back and forward acting like a straight tap. It was enough to cut out the bad threads and , to make sure, I put the clamp on by hand. If you can't screw it in by hand, it's time to back off and in spect it closely.
