ex race bike?

hiya, just bought 1995 sport model which does not seem to run very well down low, needs 3500rpm before it runs smooth, has touring model gearing apperently and the exhaust downpipes are mild steel with race type spring retainers where they join the link pipe, had a new seat unit on it as last owner said the original had been cut away on both sides near the tank, cant see any lockwired bolts anywhere, is this normal for these bikes, end can is standard, would like to check the jetting next, any ideas on original carb specs? any tips on improving low down power? cheers,
