Kickstart slip

Postby davebeef2001 » Fri Dec 11, 2009 5:23 pm

Hi there,
I am new to Mzs and this site. I recently bought a ts250/1 however am experiencing some teething problems. The greatest concern is when operating the kick start the engine fails to turn. It seems to be slipping somewhere and not grinding like a broken ratchet or similar. I have tried clutch adjustment at the handlebars and behind the tacho drive but to no avail. Is this likely to be the clutch slipping? Will I have to remove the engine cover and clutch? Worn plates?
Many thanks for any help supplied.
Rgds,
Dave Beef.

n.b. when I do get going(usually by push start) when cracking throttle open in a gear the engine races initially as if in neutral and then suddenly grips!

Sounds very much like your clutch slipping to me. I had the same problem on an old Enfield 250 last year and it was the plates not being square in the basket and therefore not engaging and disengaging properly. I can't see that adjusting the cable at the bars would have any effect on the kicker at all. The cltuch needs to be fully engaged when you are kicking the bike over because basically you are kicking it over in top gear. hope this makes sense!

most bikes kick via the clutch with bike in neutral
most that direct kick the motor are scooters with automatics

so bad plates or weak springs
or the adjustment in side on the clutch basket is out
if its been out too long it will ware out the plates
list your city .. you may have a local that can help
or point you to a good shop
